BBRF Consistently Rated As A Top Charity

The Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (BBRF) is committed to awarding research grants to develop improved treatments, cures, and methods of prevention for mental illness. Since 1987, we have awarded more than $408 million to fund more than 5,900 grants to thousands of scientists around the world, which has led to billions of dollars in additional funding.

100% of every dollar donated for research is invested in our research grants. Our operating expenses are covered by separate foundation grants.

Over the past few years, we have been recognized as a top charity by a number of media outlets and charity evaluators. Here are a few examples:

World Mental Health Day: 5 Effective Charities You Can Support

Thank you, Mr. Banis, for including BBRF on your list!

Best and Worst Charities for Your Donations

from Consumer Reports

“If you're planning to make a charitable donation this holiday season, make sure you know more about the group than just the name it goes by.”

This is what author Anthony Giorgianni of Consumer Reports advises, and we couldn’t agree more. It’s very important for donors to do their due diligence before committing to make a charitable contribution. Mr. Giorgianni suggests donors take a look at ratings on sites like:

In this helpful article, Giorgianni offers information about these charity watchdogs and ultimately offers a comprehensive list of some of the highest and lowest rated charities sorted by cause. We are honored to be included on this list under Highest-Rated Charities in the Mental Health and Disabilities section. 11 Organizations To Support During Mental Health Awareness Month & Beyond

from Bustle

We are excited to be included on this list among some really stellar organizations doing incredible work. Author Mia Mercado posted this article during Mental Health Awareness Month in an effort to highlight several charities “who are already doing the work to fight the stigma and support healthy conversations on mental health.” She opens the article with this compelling message:

“When it comes to conversations on mental health, our culture is still fairly silent. The stigmatization of mental illness in our country creates an environment where talking about mental health is taboo and, in turn, not seen as a priority. One of the biggest ways to help fight mental health stigma is by understanding its scope, looking especially at the research and resources provided by organizations dedicated to mental health. Supporting these organizations during Mental Health Awareness Month, which is in May every year, is all well and good — but supporting them year round is even better.”

6 Mental Health Organizations That Need (And Deserve) Your Support

These Mental Health Charities Have the Most Impact

from MONEY

After the tragic passing of comedian Robin Williams, MONEY published an article recommending “mental illness and suicide prevention charities where your dollars will be put to good use.” Author, Kerri Anne Renzulli collaborated with Charity Navigator to identify organizations that met the following criteria:

  • received high ratings for their extremely high levels of accountability and transparency for donors
  • sustained their programs, and the high percentage of their revenue spent on programs and services rather than administrative or fundraising costs.

Ms. Renzulli points out that BBRF awards research grants to scientists specializing in not just one area or illness, but across multiple illnesses and disciplines including depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, autism, and bipolar, attention-deficit hyperactivity, post-traumatic stress (PTSD), and obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD).

Charity Navigator's Top 10 Tuesday: Suicide Prevention & Mental Health

from the Charity Navigator Blog

On the Charity Navigator Blog, Ashley Post lists a number of “organizations recognized as leaders in the field of mental health,” in an article focused on suicide prevention. She explains some alarming statistics about suicide rates, in the wake of the tragic deaths of TV personality Anthony Bourdain and designer Kate Spade. In an effort to “to elevate the voices of effective organizations that are advocating for and providing support and education to individuals and families that are experiencing mental illness,” Post shared some top-rated charities by Charity Navigator, including BBRF.

We hope you will choose to support the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation and our vision of improving the lives of those with mental illness and enabling people to live full, happy, and productive lives. It is because of the partnership between our donors and our scientists that advances and scientific breakthroughs do occur.
