Story highlights

Today is World Mental Health Day! The World Health Organization (WHO) designated this year's theme "Living with Schizophrenia."

World Mental Health Day is observed every year on October 10th with the goal of globally raising mental illness awareness and support of mental health. With the theme, "Living with Schizophrenia," this year’s focus is living a healthy life with schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder, characterized by profound disruptions in thinking that affect language, perception and the sense of self. It often includes psychotic experiences such as hearing voices or delusions. It can impair functioning through the loss of an acquired capability to earn a livelihood, or the disruption of studies. Schizophrenia is usually diagnosed in late adolescence or early adulthood. Most cases of schizophrenia can be treated and people affected by it can lead productive lives and be integrated into society.

The Brain & Behavior Research Foundation has invested nearly $162 million in schizophrenia research since 1987. Visit our schizophrenia page to learn more.

Help raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilize efforts in support of improving the lives of those with schizophrenia. Please share this on your social media channels and support schizophrenia research.
