With a background of studies in brain imaging and neurodevelopment, Dr. Buckley is currently conducting a program of research on the neurobiology and treatment of schizophrenia, with a focus on the genetics of the disorder and the psychopharmacology of relapse. His collaborative studies have explored genetic differences that can improve disease diagnosis and treatment, identifying a predictor of disease relapse, monitoring for the potentially dangerous metabolic side effects of newer antipsychotic medications and comparing injectible medicine to tablets.

Before his appointment to the Medical College of Georgia in 2000, Dr. Buckley was a professor and vice chair in the Department of Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and medical director for the adult state psychiatric services for Cleveland and Toledo.
He is author of a textbook on psychiatry, editor-in-chief of two journals, editor of nine specialist books on schizophrenia and is widely published on schizophrenia in medical literature.
